Metal Clay Jewelry

In the Fall of 2009 I rediscovered an article from an old 2007 edition of Metalsmith Magazine. It was written by Donald Friedlich, and the title was, “Metal Clay, On The Cusp”. The stunning silver jewelry depicted on those pages inspired my venture into Precious Metal Clay, a wonderful invention of a Dr. M. Morikawa in the late 1990s. This medium combines finely-powdered pure metal, organic binder and water. The result is a versatile substance that lends itself to a nearly unlimited array of sculptural techniques. In recent years bronze and copper have become available in this “clay” form as well. How refreshing to create metal sculpture without the complications of casting!
All metal jewelry depicted on this page have been fired in a kiln at temperatures over 1500 degrees Fahrenheit, during which the organic binder is burnt out, leaving pure, sintered metal. Prices and availability provided upon request.
